Forecast the Facts

We talk a lot about extreme weather and climate change here on the Climate Reality blog. But you know where they aren’t talking about it? Your local news station.

Most Americans learn their local weather – extreme and otherwise – from their TV’s meteorologists. And in fact, the majority of TV meteorologists don’t believe in manmade climate change. More than that, they aren’t held accountable by the American Meteorological Society to speak the truth.

That’s why our friends at 350.org, the League of Conservation Voters, and Citizen Engagement Lab just launched Forecast the Facts.

According to their website, the Forecast the Facts campaign “hold(s) meteorologists accountable on climate change. It starts by calling on the American Meteorological Society to issue a strong statement on climate change.”

What’s their strategy?

“In order to convince meteorologists to forecast the facts, we have to know where they stand. So we’re tracking meteorologists’ attitudes toward climate change across the country … Know what your meteorologist thinks? Drop us a line: tips@forecastthefacts.org.

wouldn’t it be just phenomenal if independent vocational societies and associations had to appoint scientists to jobs…… or at least form the job application and interviewing panel…… or each newsbroadcastnig company needed to declare on their website, whether their meteorologist is endorsed by the AMS? We would be looking at real scientific information and could make well informed decisions as citizens…..

I am a true believer but wouldn’t reasonable prudence make a reasonable person safeguard what is so important. If not for the natural beauty of our planet and its inhabitants than for humanity’s security/survival. What is it that we as people (not corporatate interest) have to lose? Not that much when we look on the other side of the scale if you ask me.
