Recently, the Heartland Institute put up — and just as quickly pulled down after a firestorm of criticism — a truly bizarre billboard in Chicago attempting to equate climate science with radicals and murderers. Since the billboard was suddenly and unexpectedly empty, we thought we would take the opportunity to remind Heartland who is really on the fringe here.

So in advance of the Heartland Institute’s annual conference next week, we’re putting our own ad in its place. We’re also putting up eight other billboards nearby — so that Chicagoans and everyone at the conference will see our response.

Of course it’s more than just every major national academy of science in the world that understands the science and the threat we all face from the climate crisis. It’s also businesses large and small, doctors and nurses, religious leaders, military leaders, governments and concerned citizens everywhere. So the next time someone tries to tell you climate change is a hoax, remember you’ve got reality (and just about everyone else) on your side.

Global warming and global cooling and other climactic changes in the weather are obvious to anyone who goes outdoors regularly

I live in Canada, 5 minutes south of Detroit and have been doing photographs of atmospheric situations for over 13 years. Most of these are from 120′ above ground. These last 6 years, and especially the last 3 years have been right off the scale of “not quite right.”

It’s sad that some people are dismissive of preponderance of evidence, especially when the solution could simple mean to clean up our environment…and even to create a healthier economy of green jobs.

THE POPE… the freaking Pope… believes in Global Warming. The Vatican website even has a section on it. So, according to Heartland: Kaczynski = The Pope?

Way to Go President Al Gore! You showed the Heartland Institute who’s boss! Reality: 1 Deniers: 0. Hallelujah!

The battle isn’t over yet. Deniers are printing out even more propaganda. Check out this tract by Jack Chick. Al Gore doesn’t worship demons. He’s a born again Christian (and I worship Jesus too.)

James displays the typical skeptics lack of any deep thought. What you are describing is weather, what scientists are concerned about are the long term changes to climate caused by man increasing the level of CO2 in the atmosphere by 40% since pre industrial, a known greenhouse gas that causes warming.

You don’t have to be crazy to deny Global Warming, you just have to be paid by big oil.

I respect what you are trying to do, but I think it is a waste of money and effort. This will not change anyones mind and will just create more anger for your cause. It looks to me like a childish game, use facts not more insults.

Even if they science were not nearly unanimous, it is plainly evident that the more heat you trap inside an atmosphere, the warmer things get. Look at ANY day when it is hot during the day and clouds roll in during the evening vs. ANY day when it is similarly hot during the day and the skies stay clear at night. THAT is what is happening to the Earth, right now. Even IF the science were NOT clear, why would you gamble with your children’s futures? It is crystal clear that burning fossil fuels is not GOOD, so why are we even debating whether or not global warming is occurring. Send massive quantities of our money to a few large companies, or find smaller, innovative companies to find clean fuels? Fuel prices will ONLY go up, over the long haul. Spills, war, poisoned areas, destroyed wildlife areas and fishing grounds. It is not worth the price for a failed product. Rudolf Diesel actually designed his engine to run on vegetable oil, so let’s get to it. Solutions are there, but we have to demand them louder than the oil companies demand that they be crushed.

I am a very selfish old crone who has been an animal welfare activist for about 42 years. If I had a nickel for every tear I have shed when observing the unspeakable atrocities the *superior* beings on this planet inflict on the innocent creatures who have no voice, no choice (even in the wild), I would probably build sanctuaries all over our dying planet and thumb my nose at the “superior” beings (people) who are mostly dumber than the illiterate animal !!!! Actually, even the most simple-minded creature is a heck of a lot smarter than a human being. LOL
So when I read about the vultures called Catholic Priests who have to be the dumbest, most unaware of REAL LIFE as Real People actually LIVE and bleat on & on about their impossibly ignorant view of the *real world* (their obsession with forbidding Catholic women to use birth control for crying out loud)…..Are all Catholic prelates as crazy as the herd sticking their noses way too close to OUR constitutional right to NOT be scolded by nutso clergymen?
~~~Oh yeah, I am a proud Atheist, and very happy to finally shed that waste of time called “going to church” and other nonsense. Fairytales are for very small children. Adults should know better. Try visiting NASA.gov — their site is fantastic. The UNIVERSE is fantastic. Or however much of it we puny humans can figure out. The images from the site are stupendous.
My kids know NOT to touch hot burners on the stove because they will get burned, just as they know NOT to run into the street. It is alarming to me that some people still haven’t learned the lessons that the Earth is des-perately trying to teach us–extreme, deadly weather–not to mention every reputable scientist in the world.
I am a Sioux Indian and a Harper Author. Basically it all gets back to Religion which all is man-made, man-designed, man-controlled, man maneuvered moreso to gain more control. Spirituality is based on Nature which human will never control totally. The Pope focusses on his Vatican Bank not on the real world and denies the extreme danger Over-Population is exponentially causing- hence Planetary Heating. We Spiritual people will win out in the end but not a helluva lot left when we do. Europe mostly & China have already awakened.
Only two types attend Heartland – those who have a profit seeking motive. They line their own pockets and can give a damn less what happens to the planet and all we living creatures. 2nd are the religious Loonies who are extremely ignorant and non-observant as to what the Higher Power (If you believe in one) is showing what happens when too many people start sending too much carbon skyward. The Loonies are so brain washed that they are in extreme denial. They get themselves elected however. Anti-abortion is their key word and stimulus. They also belief dinosaurs were running around a few milennia ago. They believe their man God will appear in the sky and wave a magic wand just in case there is something to this crazy Planetary Heating.
