We ♥ the EPA

Today, Lisa Jackson says goodbye to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the federal agency she ran for four years. We’d like to thank former Administrator Jackson for her service. But oh heck, we’re not shy: Consider this a bit of a Valentine’s Day card to Ms. Jackson and the entire EPA.

The EPA takes a lot of flack for what it does. But the reality is, since it was established by Richard Nixon in 1970, the EPA has done us a world of good. We love the EPA because it keeps our air clean, and keeps our cities and countrysides from becoming a “post-apocalyptic … hellscape.” We love the EPA because it cleans up our neighborhoods after dirty weather like Superstorm Sandy. And we really love the EPA for proposing the first ever-national limit on the dangerous carbon pollution that is changing our climate.

But even through our Valentine’s Day candy-colored glasses, we can see much remains to be done.

The EPA has a critical role to play in President Obama’s promise to “respond to the threat of climate change.” For example, the current limit on carbon pollution only addresses power plants that haven’t been built yet — not the thousands of power plants across the country that are spewing pollution right now. And then there’s the question of how EPA should deal with the global warming pollution released by the country’s rapidly growing natural gas “fracking” industry.

The road ahead might not be smooth. As in the past, the EPA will be attacked by the dirty energy industries who refuse to be held accountable for the cost of their pollution. These same special interests will pressure the White House to stop the EPA from taking meaningful action to solve the climate crisis.

Let’s show EPA that we’ve got its back as it addresses climate change and fulfills its mission “to protect human health and the environment”! If you like clean air and a safe climate — no matter what your political beliefs — join us this Valentine’s Day in thanking EPA. And if you can, join us this Sunday for a historic rally at the White House to tell President Obama and his administration that it’s time to move forward on climate.
