As you may have noticed, The Climate Reality Project blog has been full of content related to our Living on Thin Ice campaign. We are very proud of this campaign and the expeditions we have held around the world in places like the Sierra Nevada, Antarctica, Ecuador and New York. But meanwhile, our stellar Presenters are very busy bringing the reality of the climate crisis to communities all over the world.
Observing flash flood risk in the Sun Koshi River basin, Nepal
The shrinking of glaciers in this area is leading to the formation and growth of more glacial lakes. This basin is vulnerable to flash floods caused by sudden discharges of water from such lakes, known as glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), as well as additional floods from intense rainfall and landslides.
Living on Thin Ice: Tennis-shoeing through a Sierra Nevada winter
We can’t solve a global climate problem overnight. But here in California, the Sierra Nevada Alliance and Sierra Nevada Conservancy are doing their part to respond to the decline in snowpack.
Preparing the Gowanus Canal for Climate Change
This is the second of two blog posts about the impacts of climate change on a neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York. Members of the Gowanus Canal Conservancy are taking a look at how sea level rise could impact a local canal.
A victory for The Lorax
I was deeply inspired by Mr. Wells’ fourth grade class. They changed the moment for The Lorax by making sure the film wasn’t just about movie tickets and extra-large sodas, but acknowledging the full truth about the climate crisis and providing a platform to take action.
Clean energy: The sky’s the limit
What’s the most exciting part of clean energy? To me, it’s the technology. How cool is it that someday, when we flip the switch in our houses, our electricity could come from solar panels in space?
A Keystone XL victory
In case you missed it, the U.S. State Department announced yesterday they have rejected TransCanada’s permit for the Keystone XL pipeline. This is a huge victory – and we can’t thank you enough for all your hard work to make this happen.
Clean energy, full speed ahead
Today, wind energy is still going strong, but solar power is giving wind a run for its money. Solar power is hands down the fastest growing clean energy technology on the planet.
Marooned by climate change
What some communities are facing is almost incomprehensible. Because most of us live in large cities, we have easy access to groceries, supplies and services. Have you ever lived in a remote area where global warming impacted your access? Or, like many of us, can you scarcely imagine what life would mean if you found yourself stranded by climate change?
Clean energy is budget-friendly
Renewable energy is rapidly becoming just as inexpensive as fossil fuels – even when you don’t account for the very high costs from the carbon pollution that’s changing our climate. The good news is that we’re well on our way to reaping all of renewable energy’s benefits. This is a clean energy future that I can hardly wait for. I hope our top policymakers agree with me!
