August 28-September 3, 2020
Registration for our upcoming Climate Reality Leadership Corps Global Training closed on August 6, 2020. Sign up to learn more about future trainings.
This August, in response to the overwhelming interest shown in our first-ever virtual training, The Climate Reality Project and former Vice President Al Gore will host our second virtual Climate Reality Leadership Corps training.
The 45th Climate Reality Leadership Corps Training, running August 28–September 3, will offer priority admittance to those who have already applied to the July 2020 Climate Reality Leadership Corps Global Training. A limited number of spots in this intensive and empowering event will also be available to other members of the public.
This immersive global event comes at an unprecedented moment in history. The COVID-19 emergency has shattered our sense of normalcy. The climate crisis is deepening. Protests demanding racial justice are sweeping the planet.
The Climate Reality Leadership Corps Global Trainings will give thousands of climate activists the know-how and network to face this critical moment, mobilize communities for action, and accelerate a just transition to clean energy that helps halt rising temperatures and create a fair and healthy future for all. Requiring just a few hours of attendees’ time each day of the seven-day training period, this event will feature leading scientists, researchers, activists, and advocates.
The stakes are clear. We can see our climate changing and injustice growing across the planet. The good news is that what comes next is up to us.
This August, join us online to make 2020 a turning point and together build a powerful global movement for change.
The 45th Climate Reality Leadership Corps training will take place virtually with two-to-four hours of programming each day from August 28–September 3, 2020. Attendees will have the opportunity to become trained Climate Reality Leaders by completing the requirements of the training, including tuning in to live and on-demand sessions, attending small group videoconference sessions, and completing learning exercises.
This free virtual training utilizes a unique model, combining the best of online events and education with personalized networking opportunities and meet-ups.
- Compelling Content: Participate in live and on-demand sessions on the science and solutions of the climate crisis and build the skills to drive real change.
- Customization: Complete training requirements with the flexibility to design an agenda based on your interests and availability.
- Community Building: Network with attendees from around the world in similar industries and with shared interests. Build deeper relationships with a small group of activists chosen from your geographic region and work together with an experienced Climate Reality Leader.
Throughout the training, attendees will apply what they’ve learned by completing Acts of Leadership that spread awareness, drive action, and support solutions to the climate crisis.
So how does the training work?
Attendees work through five modules, each of which builds upon each other. Modules can consist of live sessions, on-demand sessions, networking sessions, small-group work, and activities to complete individually.
Q. WHY SHOULD I PARTICIPATE IN THE TRAINING?
A. Train with former US Vice President Al Gore as a Climate Reality Leader to gain the knowledge and tools to shape public opinion, inspire action, and lead the global fight for climate solutions.
Attendees who complete the required training components will become Climate Reality Leaders and receive a certificate of completion and a green ring pin to wear as symbol of their commitment to climate action. Training requirements include completing one-to-four hours of training activities each day, such as live broadcast sessions, on-demand breakout sessions, small group videoconference sessions, and individual submissions.
These new Climate Reality Leaders will join a network of more than 27,000 change-makers in over 150 countries, and complete “Acts of Leadership” to make a meaningful difference in the fight against the climate crisis.
They’ll also get access to Reality Hub, the online community exclusively for Climate Reality Leaders, where they can access resources, share ideas and projects, and stay updated on opportunities to take action. Climate Reality Leaders can also work together to plan and coordinate actions through Climate Reality branches
Q. WHEN IS THE GLOBAL TRAINING TAKING PLACE?
A. The Climate Reality Leadership Corps training will take place virtually with one-to-four hours of programming each day between August 28 – September 3, 2020.
The training will be entirely online, including a mix of prescheduled, live and on-demand, self-directed sessions offered throughout the week, allowing access for attendees worldwide.
Q. HOW MUCH DOES A TRAINING COST?
A. There is no fee to participate in the training.
Instead, attendees are expected to pay their experience forward by completing 10 Acts of Leadership within one year of the training. An Act of Leadership is an action that spreads awareness, drives change, or supports solutions to the climate crisis.
Q. WHAT IS THE TIME COMMITMENT FOR THE GLOBAL TRAINING?
A. We estimate that participating in the training requires a minimum of 17 hours, spread over the seven days. The training platform will remain open for a brief period after the training, so attendees may choose to dedicate additional time to training.
Required programming will be a mix of pre-scheduled live and on-demand sessions, learning exercises, and actions, so attendees should be able to create an agenda that works for their schedules.
While some sessions will be pre-scheduled based on time zone, the training software will allow attendees to build a personalized training agenda. Attendees will need to allocate time outside of required programmed sessions to complete required learning exercises and actions. In addition to required components, the training includes optional sessions, networking opportunities, and resources.
This is an intensive training designed to give everyone – no matter their level of previous experience in the climate movement – the tools, skills, and confidence they need to lead on climate. This training offers the immersive nature of our signature in-person trainings in an online environment and includes the guidance of designated mentors for every attendee.
Q. WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE GLOBAL TRAINING?
A. Attendees must be at least the age of majority in their country, or at least 13 years of age in the US, and committed to completing all the training components to be eligible to participate in the virtual event.
Individuals who are already trained Climate Reality Leaders are welcome to request to join; however, they must have logged an Act of Leadership in the past year to be considered. Trained Climate Reality Leaders are also encouraged to apply to serve as mentors.
Q. DO I NEED TO PARTICIPATE FOR THE WHOLE TRAINING?
A. Anyone who is requesting to join the Climate Reality Leadership Corps training must be able to commit to the time necessary to complete all required components of the training within the allotted time period of August 28 to September 3, with the ability to make up work through September 10. Required components will be clearly marked, and attendees will be able to track their own progress.
Programming is a mixture of live and on-demand sessions and learning exercises. While some sessions will be pre-scheduled based on time zone, content is available at various times in multiple time zones, so attendees will be able to create an agenda that works for their schedule.
Q. WHAT TECHNOLOGY DO I NEED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE GLOBAL TRAINING?
A. The training will be hosted on a web-based platform and will be accessible from any internet-enabled device: computer, tablet, mobile device, etc. Attendees will need access to a device with a working microphone and camera. As the training is web-based, attendees will need access to a reliable, high-speed internet connection.
Q. I DO NOT HAVE A RELIABLE INTERNET CONNECTION AT HOME. HOW CAN I PARTICIPATE?
A. Some governments, organizations, and internet providers are offering free or reduced price Wi-Fi service. Please click here for a compilation of some of these programs and other internet connection options.
Q. HOW DO I LOG-IN TO THE TRAINING? WHERE DO I FIND MY LOG-IN INFORMATION?
A. Each confirmed attendee will receive an email with a dedicated link to their unique username and password several days before the training.
In the meantime, attendees will be invited to connect with fellow attendees and access orientation materials in a closed group in Reality Hub, Climate Reality’s online community designed specifically for Climate Reality Leaders.
Q. WHEN DO I USE REALITY HUB AND WHEN DO I USE THE TRAINING PLATFORM?
A. Attendees will be using both Reality Hub and a training platform in order get the most out of the training experience.
Reality Hub is the online community where attendees can meet and communicate with other Global Training attendees, participate in discussion forums about the event, and access orientation materials. Importantly, it is also where they will track their Acts of Leadership. When they complete the training, they will have expanded, full access to Reality Hub, which includes a wider range of resources, including former US Vice President Gore’s slideshow decks, and the ability to communicate with the broader Climate Reality Leader network. They will be invited to start using Reality Hub before the training begins, and can continue to interact after the training is over.
The training platform is where attendees will access all Global Training content, join their tablework meetings, network, and more. Attendees will only use this platform for the duration of the training, and both the training site and app will close on Thursday, September 10.
Q. WILL TRANSLATION SERVICES BE AVAILABLE?
A. All training programming will be provided in English.
Q. WILL CLOSED CAPTIONING BE AVAILABLE?
A. Yes, closed captioning will be offered for the live and on-demand training sessions. If please email email@example.com with any other accessibility questions.
Q. DO I/HOW DO I REQUEST TO JOIN THE CLIMATE REALITY LEADERSHIP CORPS GLOBAL TRAINING?
A. Registration for the Global Training is now closed. Please click here to sign up for the Climate Reality mailing list to be the first to know about future trainings.
Q. HOW CAN MINORS PARTICIPATE IN THE TRAINING?
A. Anyone that is at least the age of majority in their country, or at least 13 years of age in the US, is eligible to participate in the training. However, attendees between the ages of 13-18 require permission from a parent or legal guardian. Separate instructions for providing this permission will be provided after selection.
Q. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ATTENDING A VIRTUAL TRAINING AND ATTENDING AN IN-PERSON TRAINING?
A. At all Climate Reality Leadership Corps trainings, in-person or virtual, attendees gain the knowledge and tools to shape public opinion, inspire action, and lead the global fight for climate solutions. While the outcome and level of commitment remain the same, in-person and virtual trainings differ in format and content.
Climate Reality Leadership Corps in-person trainings are two-to-three-day immersive events tailored to have a particular focus on local and regional climate impacts and solutions. Attendees come from around the world, but the audience is primarily from the host state, country, or region.
The Climate Reality Leadership Corps Global Training is a series of live and on-demand sessions and learning exercises run throughout a week on a web-based platform. Q. WHEN WILL LIVE SESSIONS TAKE PLACE? WHAT DO I DO IF I HAVE A SCHEDULING CONFLICT WITH A LIVE SESSION?
A. Live sessions will run multiple times to allow most attendees to participate in the late afternoon or evening in their part of the world. Attendees will be pre-assigned to live sessions depending on their time zone. The best way for attendees to confirm the time of their broadcast during the training will be to check the “My Schedule” section of the training platform. All times will be listed in attendees’ local time zone.
For planning purposes, the live sessions are at the following times (Friday-Monday and Thursday) in each of these three regions::
- Asia-Pacific: 17:00-19:30 (UTC + 8)
- Europe and Africa: 16:00-18:30 (UTC + 0)
- The Americas (and Pacific Islanders): 18:00-20:30 (UTC –4)
To check the local time manually, please click the appropriate link below and consult the time zone conversion tool.
Attendees can also use this resource to find when the live sessions are airing in their time zone.
If an attendee is unable to attend one or two live sessions, make-up opportunities will be available.
Q. HOW CAN I CONNECT WITH FELLOW ATTENDEES AT THE GLOBAL TRAINING?
A. There will be multiple ways to connect with fellow attendees:
- Virtual tables. Similar to an in-person training, attendees will be “seated” in pre-assigned small groups, their “virtual table” for the event. Each table group will have a Climate Reality Mentor, a volunteer previously trained by Climate Reality, who will help guide them through the training and facilitate regular conversations.
- Virtual networking sessions. Attendees have the option to participate in one speed networking session.
- Virtual meet-ups. Attendees will attend virtual meet-up sessions to learn about and connect with Climate Reality branches and chapters in their geographic area.
- Direct messaging and discussion forums. Attendees will be able to search for each other and communicate through Reality Hub, Climate Reality’s online community specifically for Climate Reality Leaders.
EXPECTATIONS FOR PARTICIPATION
Q. WHAT ARE THE ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS AND HOW WILL THEY BE MONITORED?
A. In order to complete the virtual training, attendees must complete all required components:
1) Attending all prescheduled live sessions and table work meetings
2) Attending a designated number of on-demand breakout sessions
3) Submitting required learning exercises, survey, and actions
Q. WHAT ARE THE 10 “ACTIVITIES” THAT I NEED TO COMPLETE AND WHERE AND WHEN MUST I COMPLETE THEM BY?
A. Within a year of completing the training with the Climate Reality Leadership Corps, attendees are required to perform 10 “Acts of Leadership.” Acts of Leadership come in a variety of forms and can be completed anywhere in the world. Examples of Acts of Leadership include giving a presentation, writing a blog, writing a letter to the editor, organizing a climate action campaign, or meeting with local leaders. Climate Reality will offer support and resources, but Climate Reality Leaders will be responsible for completing actions and for logging them on Reality Hub, the online community specifically for trained Climate Reality Leaders.
Attendees will have the opportunity to complete several qualifying Acts of Leadership during the training.
Q. MY [PARTNER, SPOUSE, FRIEND, CHILD, ETC.] WANTS TO PARTICIPATE IN THE TRAINING WITH ME. CAN WE SHARE AN ACCOUNT AND WORK THROUGH THE TRAINING TOGETHER?
A. We love the enthusiasm and interest! However, we ask that each person request to join the training individually as each account is configured and the attendee experience designed for a single participant. Moreover, only those who are officially registered as attendees and complete the required training components will be considered trained Climate Reality Leaders. If attendees share their login information, it may result in their removal from the platform and the training. Therefore, if attendees have a friend or family member who wants to work through the training together, encourage that person to submit their own request to join a future training.
Q. HOW DOES THE CLIMATE REALITY PROJECT ACCOUNT FOR EVENT-RELATED EMISSIONS?
A. Once energy conservation and emission reduction strategies are exhausted, any remaining emissions are tracked and measured. We compensate for the total carbon footprint of the event via verifiable carbon offset projects.
