Working for a just transition in oil and gas country. Meet Julia Nakhleh, a Climate Reality Leader and powerful voice for just transition in the heart of oil and gas country. Julia's journey began after completing the virtual global Climate Reality Leadership Corps training in July 2020. Since then, she's become a leader in every sense of the word. She joined the Philadelphia and Southeastern Pennsylvania chapter and became the chair of the chapter’s first campaign advocating for Pennsylvania's participation in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), a market-driven, cap-and-invest program to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from power plants. For the past two years, Julia fought tirelessly for Pennsylvania to join 11 other states in the RGGI, providing verbal testimony during virtual public hearings and drafting and submitting written comments in support of the program. Julia's hard work and dedication finally paid off when Pennsylvania officially became the 12th state in the US to join the RGGI on April 23, 2022. However, Julia's work is not done yet. Pennsylvania's participation is currently under threat from lawsuits brought by the fossil fuel lobby, and Julia is leading the chapter’s RGGI campaign committee in fighting back. Julia was also a key member of the planning committee for the first RGGI Rally in Philadelphia in November 2022, where she facilitated and shared posters and signs to ensure maximum public visibility and impact for the event. Julia's advocacy for the RGGI Investments Act and her belief that worker transition and environmental justice are important parts of solving the climate crisis have also made her a sought-after speaker on the topic and an inspiration for advocates working for a truly just transition in Pennsylvania and beyond.
