Al Gore and The Climate Reality Project to Bring Climate Reality Leadership Corps to Las Vegas

SHARE

Washington, DC (January 17, 2020) – Al Gore and The Climate Reality Project will host the 44th Climate Reality Leadership Corps training in Las Vegas, Nevada from March 8-10, 2020. Applications are now open for the three-day activist training, which will explore the climate challenges and opportunities facing Nevada and the American West.

Led by former US Vice President and Climate Reality Founder and Chairman Al Gore, attendees will emerge from the training equipped with practical tools to effectively communicate about the climate crisis and contribute to a diverse, equitable, and inclusive movement for solutions. As part of the training, participants will also learn how to give an up-to-date version of the presentation made famous in the Academy Award-winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth

“2019 was a breakthrough year for climate activism, but in 2020 and beyond, we need to act with greater urgency to accelerate the clean energy transition,” said Vice President Gore. “States like Nevada represent the enormous potential of the sustainability revolution to address the climate crisis and support social and economic progress. I am inspired by the grassroots energy led by Climate Reality Leaders around the country working to build a better future. All of us at The Climate Reality Project are thrilled to bring the next Climate Reality Leadership Corps training to Nevada.”

The start of the new year marks the beginning of a critical decade for climate action. Scientists have officially declared 2019 the second-warmest year on record, and unless greenhouse gas emissions are cut in half by 2030, disappearing water supplies, raging wildfires, and deadly heat waves could become the new normal, especially in areas like the American West, which is already warm and dry and thus particularly vulnerable to the escalating impacts of the climate crisis. Climate impacts like these increasingly and disproportionately impact frontline populations, highlighting the crucial connection between addressing both the climate crisis and longstanding social injustice.

Despite these challenges, Nevada represents the promise of viable, scalable climate solutions. As the US state with one of the nation’s highest solar potentials, Nevada is proof that investing in the clean energy transition is no longer a roll of the dice. By supporting and bolstering local, regional, and national clean energy initiatives, building more connected and sustainable cities, cutting tailpipe pollution and expanding mass transit, and ensuring that climate solutions include and empower frontline populations, we can power communities, grow economies responsibly, slash emissions, and accelerate the transition to a more just and sustainable future.

The training will include sessions on how citizens can influence decision-makers, communicate with diverse audiences, and implement ambitious climate action in their communities. The training will also focus on the movement for environmental justice and explore how cities, towns, and businesses are already taking the lead in creating and implementing climate solutions.
