Al Gore Honors Climate Activist Dr. Jairo Garcia With The Green Ring Award
Washington, DC (May 19, 2021) – Former US Vice President Al Gore presented the Alfredo Sirkis Memorial Green Ring Award to Dr. Jairo Garcia at the Climate Reality Leadership Corps’ Virtual US Training, an online event to train climate activists with the knowledge and skills needed to build an equitable and inclusive climate movement.
The Green Ring Award honors Climate Reality Leaders who have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to their roles as climate communicators and activists. The latest honoree, Dr. Jairo Garcia, is a passionate climate leader and advocate, and serves as chair of Climate Reality’s Atlanta chapter, where he works with fellow activists to build support for local climate solutions.
An expert in sustainability and climate change, Dr. Garcia served as the City of Atlanta’s director of climate policies, and in 2017, represented the mayor of Atlanta at COP23. He is currently a professor at the Georgia Institution of Technology and Johns Hopkins University, where he has been recognized with an Excellence in Teaching Award.
“I am deeply honored to receive the Green Ring Award,” said Jairo Garcia. “I share it with my fellow Climate Reality leaders in Atlanta and others around the world working to accelerate the changes that the world desperately needs to create a livable, healthy planet for ourselves and future generations.”
Climate Reality’s Virtual US Training focused on mobilizing activists across the country in support of bold climate action policies with the power to reduce emissions, address racial and economic inequality, and create jobs. Upon completion of the two-week, entirely virtual program, participants joined Climate Reality’s global network of more than 31,000 climate activists around the world. Climate Reality Leaders work together to build public awareness of the climate crisis, educate their communities about the practical solutions at hand, and strengthen public support for the transition to a clean energy future.
Climate Reality’s next virtual training will take place from July 10-18, and the program will focus on the climate crisis in Latin America. For more information about the Climate Reality Leadership Corps program, please visit: https://www.climaterealityproject.org/training.
