Atlanta, Ga. (March 16, 2019) – On March 16, former US Vice President and Climate Reality Chairman Al Gore honored Laura Betts of Winter Garden, Florida with The Climate Reality Project’s Green Ring Award at the organization’s recent climate and environmental justice training in Atlanta. The Green Ring Award is presented to outstanding Climate Reality Leaders who have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to their role as climate communicators and activists.

After training as a Climate Reality Leader in Chicago in 2013, Betts immediately began working to build the movement for climate action in Central Florida. As the co-chair of Climate Reality’s Central Florida chapter, Betts leads chapter members and activists in their efforts to build greater public support for local, regional, and national climate solutions. Under her leadership, the chapter worked to help implement the City of Orlando’s Green Works Plan. Betts is also a steadfast ally for frontline communities most affected by the climate crisis. In the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, Betts personally made soup for more than 200 victims of the hurricane, many of whom were refugees.

“Laura is a true example of what it means to be a Climate Reality Leader,” said Ken Berlin, president and CEO of The Climate Reality Project. “Through her work with Climate Reality’s Central Florida Chapter, she has worked tirelessly to advance climate action and social justice, paying special attention to the climate crisis’s disproportionate impact on our most vulnerable communities. Climate Reality was honored to present Laura with the Green Ring Award in Atlanta and we look forward to hearing about the incredible work she continues to do in the future.”

More than 2,000 climate activists gathered in Atlanta to be trained as Climate Reality Leaders by world-class scientists, climate communicators, grassroots organizers, and Vice President Gore. These newly minted Climate Reality Leaders have emerged from the training equipped with the skills to create greater public awareness of global climate challenges, share the good news about the practical solutions in our hands today, and build broad, inclusive coalitions to advance climate action and environmental justice.

Betts was in attendance to lead a group of attendees through the trainings. She has attended six previous Climate Reality Leadership Corps trainings and mentored more than 100 Climate Reality Leaders.

“I’m thrilled to be recognized by Vice President Al Gore with Climate Reality’s Green Ring Award,” said Betts. “Climate action is the path forward for building just, inclusive, and sustainable communities, and I am honored to work with The Climate Reality Project, our chapter members in Central Florida, and supporters from around the country to create a better future for ourselves and future generations.”
