Climate Reality Commends Interior’s Methane Rule and Warns Against Denial

SHARE

The Climate Reality Project commends the Department of the Interior and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) on yesterday's finalization of their rule curbing natural gas waste and pollution on public and tribal lands. By taking action to reduce venting (intentional releases of gas into the atmosphere), flaring (burning off of gases), and leaks from both current and future oil and gas projects, the BLM is setting an important precedent for strong action on all sources of methane pollution and helping create a level playing field for energy development.

In response to the rule finalization today, Ken Berlin, president and CEO of The Climate Reality Project, released this statement:

“The Climate Reality Project thanks the Department of the Interior and the Bureau of Land Management for setting an important precedent for reining in methane emissions.

“Climate Reality is proud of our supporters who testified and commented to ensure the final rule would minimize natural gas waste, ensure a fair return to taxpayers, and protect public health and the environment to the greatest extent possible.

“Climate Reality and our supporters look forward to ensuring this rule is fully implemented. And we will work tirelessly throughout the term of the next administration to ensure that climate denial has no place in diminishing the implementation of this long overdue and welcomed rule.”
