Statement from Climate Reality President and CEO Ken Berlin on the Biden Administration’s Methane Announcements
“EPA’s new rules to dramatically reduce methane emissions from the oil and natural gas industry are an essential step to meeting our climate goals and protecting our communities. No longer will the industry be able to recklessly vent and emit methane at will.
The administration’s Methane Emissions Reduction Action Plan also lays out vital actions to reduce emissions from abandoned wells and mines, landfills, and agriculture that will not only create healthier communities but also good-paying, high-quality jobs.
Methane, the second-most prevalent greenhouse gas emitted by human activities in the US, has a global warming potential more than 80 times greater than that of carbon dioxide in the first two decades after it’s released, and we need to do everything in our power to eliminate these emissions from every source. We are encouraged to see the Biden Administration leading the way to gather support from over 90 countries to reduce methane emissions by 30% by 2030. We simply cannot address the climate crisis without aggressively addressing this super pollutant.”
