As home to some of the world’s largest oil and gas reserves, Iran has long relied on fossil fuels to power its economy. But with recognition of the threat of climate change growing, the country is beginning to shift course and turn to renewables like solar, especially in rural communities. And it’s not aiming low, either, planning to expand wind and solar by more than 1000 percent by 2018.
